Born of Empire is the second novel in the Dodecahedral series by Sally Ann Melia. In the future, Earth has grown into a twelve-planet empire ruled by the cruel and aging Emperor Frederon. His only heir is Prince Teodor, who lives behind high walls and rarely shows his face. Two days before his sixteenth birthday, Teodor is kidnapped in a brutal attack on the capital’s ancient cathedral. Meanwhile, Guy Erma, a sixteen-year-old orphan from the back alleys, is fighting for his future. He’s a gifted mathematician and a blade champion, but he can’t join the Dome Militant without a registered birth. Guy sees the kidnapping, and he knows who did it. But who can he tell? Who can he trust? And how long can the last prince survive?
Author Sally Ann Melia created a fast-paced and exciting story with two protagonists I couldn’t help rooting for. I absolutely loved Guy. He’s brave, clever, and desperate for one chance to prove himself. My heart broke for him whenever he talked about Loulou, the model he believes is his mother. Teodor was just as interesting. He’s a prince, but he’s lonely and keeps wondering if he’s really good enough. The gorans, the big cats the characters ride, were my favorite part of the world. I loved them just as much as I love dragons. I also liked how Teodor and his friend Nuria talk using telepathy. The Dome felt like a real place, with its fashion shows, politics, and danger while the rest of the world suffers. The scene where Teodor wakes up trapped in a rolling tube was so tense I couldn’t stop reading. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. The action was nonstop, the characters were relatable, and there is nothing I would change about the story. Born of Empire is perfect for readers who love sci-fi thrillers and teen heroes who have to grow up fast.
